Dead City

Zombie Lit

Dead City
Joe McKinney

This book was awesome.... until a little over half-way through. It's action packed, scary zombies, believable narrator/main character, but the ending didn't deliver. First half = great. The last is problematic for two three reasons:
  1. It's like someone said, "Hey, this book is good, but you know what the ending needs? More pizazz." So the author complied. And while it didn't "jump the shark", the fight scenes became less believable.*
  2. It's like someone else said,** "Hey, this book is good, but no one's going to buy it without an obvious moral." So, the author inserted one in the last three chapters.
  3. The final chapter is where McKinney surrendered with a "Hey, I've met my word count and the conclusion is murky. I know; let's put things back to normal, add a line or two about the moral, save the kid and badda bing, the end."
In summary, anticlimactic - a lot of pent up energy with no where to go.

Potential, though unlikely spoilers:
Time: Present Day
Cause: Big storm dredges up some sort of communicable disease
Transmission: Through body fluids
Animals: Immune
Zombies: Slowish, tend to accumulate in packs, incapable of speaking, herky jerky movements.

**I'm giving the benefit of the doubt here.
